IT INSTEAD!
Morning
session had nominations, proposals for by-laws changes and
other business action - and some shocking reports from P.I.
Team.
As the Long
Session is winding down we were alerted to a mule of a bill on
voting - which has morphed into a "strike all" and substitute
gutting of CT campaign finance laws...House passed it at 4am
Saturday morning! And then there is HB6629 that has a lot of
stuff in it that makes it uber-long...and a report on the response
to Sandy Hook shooting and social policy issues. Some good
questions about whether other interests had gone by the boards in
this group of portfolios because of the Newtown tragedy...
BY THE WAY, THE LWV OF WESTON HAD 2 IN ATTENDANCE TO CAST OUR
VOTES.
Did we forget to mention that there was a special guest?
Who, just before lunch, spoke and answered questions for about an
hour.

MacNamara, President of LWVUS, seated next to incoming
Co-President Judy Dolphin...who then had to answer some tough
questions from the floor - assisted by President Cheryl Dunson.

And
we think you will hear no apologies for National's pointed
campaign ads (in response to a question from LWV of Westport)
saying we live in times that require factual language - and
she said she wanted Connecticut to know that there are many states
that have Leagues that are fighting for the right to vote for
their citizens - and we are lucky to be able to do issue advocacy!

After the meal everyone went
back into the historic meeting room space...but first some
picture-taking! When LWVUS President shows up...

And there actually was a nice
assortment with lunch!
And we stayed on schedule

Ms. Yurasek
asked for a show of hands regarding familiarity with FACEBOOK,
LINKEDIN, TWITTER, YOUTUBE, and many said they participated - but
Leagues themselves?
ANNUAL CONVENTIONS
The biggest change - it was
explained that through the years Council and Convention have
grown so similar it seemed to be better to just have staggered
terms on the Board (also a change) and speed up action - making
convention annual - considering how much more immediately we
communicate and how research is so much faster and easier to
do...*
And then it
was over, on schedule!

CHANGES WE CAN SEE
When this writer first attended an LWVCT Convention in 1991 it
was two days long and required an overnight stay. Since
"in League" you can't take action until after study and some
form of consensus or concurrence, sometimes issues can get
ahead of League - or League be too far ahead of issues!
